I was in my hometown Jhapa about
a week ago. And books and stationery shopkeepers were very busy selling
boarding school's books, and other accessories.
But on the same note, they were
not selling a single textbook for a student studying in a government school.
I inquired. A government school itself
distributes the whole set of textbooks to the school students for a free of
charge. So shopkeepers don't bother to keep government school's books. And they
say no profit in those books, but about 15% profit in boarding school's books.
Janak Shiksha Limited, which the
Nepal government gave entire responsibility of printing the textbooks, is
wholly responsible for a government school's student not getting book on proper
time. A huge amount of commission goes to concerned parties not to publish
enough books.
It's totally shameful that our
government can't provide textbooks to school-going children. The inequality
between a rich and poor child starts from here, and become more and more
dangerous, and difficult to fill.
Our country is on the verge of
failed state. It doesn't hurt me as much as a school going children only get
textbook at the end of the season because s/he studies in a government school.
