Free Student Union Election Should Be Held ASAP

Nowadays governmental colleges are gaining extra momentum in terms of political heat since TU announced that election of Free Student Union (FSU) will take place in Baisakh, 2073. Unfortunately, the election has not taken place since four full years. The major student body among colleges normally elects its new working committee every two years.

Some colleges name FSU as Student Council only. Representatives from student unions affiliated to different political parties compete for different posts of FSU. Nepal Student Union (NSU - Read more), All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU - Read more), ANNFSU Revolutionary (ANNFSU (R) - Read more) etc are the prime student unions who compete in FSU elections. FSU was established in 1979 AD when first formal movement of students was held to restore the democracy that was prisoned by the then king Birendra Shah. Coming to the present, FSU is not only limited in political movements, but is broadly addressing students' problems, improving TU's states, and many more.

Strong and visionary FSU is a must in governmental colleges as those colleges are full of irregularities, and have compromised educational system. For instance, Tri-Chandra College has about 100 full time lecturers and professors, but to get another class takes one hour of waiting after first class commences. I joined B. Sc. there, but could not continue due to my engineering aspirations. Our first class was Chemistry, and we have to wait another one period (around 45 minutes) to have second class of Microbiology. And exactly one more period of waiting only get us to the last period of Zoology. Apart, teachers would not come on time most days. And teacher would not come altogether like a day per week.
Student unions’ ever green movement is for petroleum price hike. About three days ago, many supporters of a student union (from Tri Chandra College) were chanting slogans against the black marketing and scarcity of cooking gas. It is a good movement and puts pressure on governmental authorities to work quickly against these things.
Problems and irregularities at colleges should be well addressed by FSU. And that can only be done by clean and visionary student leaders. Moreover, the same student leader is going to be national mainstream political leader in coming future. Jhalanath Khanal, Bijaya Kumar Gachchadar, Nabindra Raj Joshi, Gagan Thapa and Himal Sharma all came to national politics after doing student politics.
A top-level student leader in well-known government college (like Tri-Chandra, Shankar Dev, Nepal Commerce, Padma Kanya etc) will go into national politics. We can further presume they have good relation with the central political leaders. And, if dynamic, far-sighted, and less-corrupt student leaders were elected in FSU election, they could certainly make some differences in attitude, and behavior of our mainstream leaders.
The FSU election gives us the opportunity to make that difference. Taking also the account that election is halted for a very long time, every concerned persons should make favorable environment for FSU election.
